skilled migrantsWestern Australia (WA) businesses are being urged by WA Treasurer Mike Nahan to hire skilled migrants. The Australian reported that the Barnett government is turning to skilled migrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The number of people leaving WA to live elsewhere in Australia is now higher with interstate migration, peaking at a net inflow of 3395 in first quarter of 2012.

WA Treasurer Mike Nahan will outline efforts to involve overseas migrants in the state economy. Dr. Nahan points out that new arrivals from overseas have been the key driver of the state’s population growth with an average increase of about 34,000 people a year.

A new state government scheme aims to increase the workforce participation of underemployed and unemployed migrants in their area of expertise. The scheme’s cost is $100,000.
